I can see a few counter-arguments. First, if the Starcaster on the Federation ship was in play, that will have been made pretty apparent waaay earlier than the Dranglaex had an opportunity to board it. I’m no tactician, however I imagine that it’s usually safer to maintain the enemy at a distance, as a result of it makes the battle a bit extra predictable, whereas boarding is pure chaos that would go both manner. Subsequently, it is sensible that the Federation ship would throw every part that they had at their opponent, together with an lively Startcaster, to stop the boarding.
